“Captive Luminescence” is a window into a conversation the subject is having with herself. As the viewer, we are only able to interpret what is going on through her body language rather than any facial cues. The woman’s back is to us, allowing her to focus on herself, represented as the moth in the lightbulb. She is harnessing the moth’s energy to light her way. But at the same time, the bulb is encapsulating the moth. Protected or a prisoner, it is up to the viewer to decide.
